Carer Consultants

Carer consultants are people who have previously or currently care for a person with a mental illness. They are employed by public mental health services, and have a good knowledge of the mental health system and the issues that are faced by families and other carers. Carer consultants provide emotional support, information and referral to families and carers. They also work with mental health staff in developing service responsiveness to the needs of carers and families. Carer consultants in Victoria have formed the Carer Consultant Network, which meets monthly. The Carer Consultant Network is currently developing a model for Carer Consultant training. The Network for Carers of People with a Mental Illness have a working collaborative relationship with the Carer Consultant Network.
